In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street—and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa’s powers for his own dark ends.

With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister’s war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move—and that one of their own has betrayed them.

Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, but her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will—the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?

As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.

clockwork prince is the second book in the infernal devices trilogy, so if you haven’t read clockwork angel, you probably shouldn’t be reading this haha. (p.s. i have a review for clockwork angel so click here to check it out!!)

in clockwork prince, the main event that was happening was the investigation of the magister. this book has lesser action than clockwork angel, but there is definitely more romance than the first book.

this book’s more character-driven rather than plot-driven, in my opinion. we focused a lot more on the characters and there were not many battle scenes like those in clockwork angel. i mean, the magister didn’t even make an appearance in this book !! however, we did get to know his backstory more so that’s great.

despite the slower pacing, i found myself enjoying clockwork prince a lot more that i thought i did when i read it for the first time years ago. clockwork prince is so much more emotional than clockwork angel.

“Will has always been the brighter burning star, the one to catch attention — but Jem is a steady flame, unwavering and honest. He could make you happy.”

we got to know jem more through his interactions with tessa. i liked that this book focused slightly more on the relationship between jem and tessa because i felt that in clockwork angel, we focused more on will rather than on jem. and i don’t even know who to ship tessa with anymore lol (but deep down, i’m rooting for will because i love him so much !!!).

also, gabriel and gideon lightwood has a part in this book !!! i loved all the training scenes they had with tessa and sophie. and ohmygod, i ship gideon and sophie so hard abcjksksk !! in clockwork prince, gideon struggles with his loyalties (his family) and with doing what’s right. i loved the character development of him especially because of that.

the ending was like this emotional roller coaster i can’t even. there were moments that made me literally LOL and there were also moments that had me so emotional because of how heart breaking it was. the ending of clockwork prince had no epic battle scene but it was still splendid because of all the character growth we see in this book.

*moving on to SPOILERS so stop scrolling if you haven’t read clockwork prince haha*

memorable moments: (my favourite and those heart-wrenching ones)

  • the training scenes with gideon and gabriel
  • the poem will wrote for tessa
  • literally all of the scenes with sophie and gideon (i never realised how much i ship them hahahah)
  • will and tessa at benedict lightwood’s party (that balcony part though ahhh!!!!)
  • honestly, all those jem and tessa moments were also cute
  • tHAT MAGNUS KISSING WILL PART (and will has no idea at all)
  • THE DEMON POX SCENE omg that part was hiLARIOUS
  • i loved the part charlotte and henry confessed their love for each other (that was SO ADORABLE)
  • when will found out the curse was fake (i was so freaking happy because he was so happy)
  • but then the whole scene with him confessing to tessa but she was already engaged to jem happened (talk about unfortunate timings wjbcksks)
    • it broke my heart to see will devastated!!!

things i didn’t really like:

  • will claiming he has to make tessa hate him but i don’t see him putting any effort into that ?? in my opinion, he was slightly more open about his feelings for tessa in clockwork prince lol
  • i honestly think the whole engagement thing was rushed because i felt that jem proposed to tessa was to make sure she had a place to stay. i know he loves her, but still.
